Karlstad, town and inland port in southern Sweden, capital of Värmland County, partly on Tingvalla Island, on the north shore of Lake Vänern. Karlstad is near the estuary of the Klar River. In the Middle Ages it was known as Tingvalla. The town was chartered and the present name adopted in 1584. Karlstad is an episcopal see and has a cathedral. Machines, matches, timber, iron goods, and textiles are the chief industrial products.It has the second largest lake port in the country after Västerås.
