The port of Lysekil lies at Grötö in Lysekil. It is a sheltered, ice-free, deep harbour that employs about 80 people. The turnover of goods has grown rapidly from a bit over 100,000 tonnes per year at the end of the 70s to the current level of approximately 400,000 tonnes annually.
Ocean liner traffic has increased and Lysekil has developed as a meaningful liner shipping port directed towards Europe. The line system is complex, including shipping companies as well as overland transport and ports.
Two regions meet in Skagerack: Oslo and southern Norway and the Swedish west coast. All European lines calling at Lysekil combine loads from both areas. In 1992, the Port of Lysekil was extended, mainly to accommodate Container shipping. The new section is located next to the Grötö Reef.
