Salem was one of the most significant seaports in early America. It has the first National Historic Site designated by Congress, Salem Maritime National Historic Site, which protects Salem's historic waterfront.Salem Terminal (The Port of Salem), a port entry since 1682, is one of the oldest ports on the East Coast, and is the newest addition to SJPC.
