A RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE were taken hostage at sea in 2010, according to the latest figures by a maritime piracy monitoring group.
Pirates kidnapped 1,181 sailors and killed eight last year, according to the International Chamber of Commerce’s International Maritime Bureau (IMB).

London, England (CNN) -- On October 26, a court in the Netherlands will decide whether 13-year-old Laura Dekker is allowed to fulfill her dream of sailing around the world -- solo.
In August, Dutch authorities placed the girl under state care for two months, following her parents' refusal to prevent her from undertaking the potentially dangerous voyage.

(CNN) -- China plans to make "every effort to rescue" a merchant ship and crew hijacked in the Indian Ocean, the country's state news agency reported on Tuesday.
