Piracy hits new record in 2010, with over 1100 hostages

A RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE were taken hostage at sea in 2010, according to the latest figures by a maritime piracy monitoring group.

Pirates kidnapped 1,181 sailors and killed eight last year, according to the International Chamber of Commerce’s International Maritime Bureau (IMB).

16-year-old Jessica Watson is one of several teenagers wanting to navigate solo around the globeLondon, England (CNN) -- On October 26, a court in the Netherlands will decide whether 13-year-old Laura Dekker is allowed to fulfill her dream of sailing around the world -- solo.

In August, Dutch authorities placed the girl under state care for two months, following her parents' refusal to prevent her from undertaking the potentially dangerous voyage.

China vows to rescue 25 crew aboard hijacked merchant ship

The Chinese-owned bulk carrier De Xin Hai was hijacked on October 19 with 25 crew members on board.

(CNN) -- China plans to make "every effort to rescue" a merchant ship and crew hijacked in the Indian Ocean, the country's state news agency reported on Tuesday.
